Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credits
for NY State School Administrators

The State Education Department / University of the State of New York, Office of the Professions, Deputy Commissioner Office of Higher Education has provided the following information in CEO Memo #06-05 - Educational Leadership Certification, Attachment 1:  Frequently Asked Questions, September 20,2006, relative to changes to Part 52.21(c) regulations:

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

7.. What are the professional development requirements for the SDL [School District Leader], SBL [School Building Leader], and SDBL [School District Business Leader]?

A total of 175 hours [average of 25 hours per year] is required every 5 years to maintain the Professional certificate as an educational leader.  School districts have been provided flexibility to define the professional development activities that are appropriate for the school leaders in their district.  These activities will become part of the district's Professional Development Plan.

THEREFORE:

1.  It is incumbent upon the school administrator to keep an accurate record of CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits earned, so as to defend his/her rights to professional certification status.

2.  It is incumbent upon the school administrator to seek and have prior school district approval for any CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits.
