BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR BOARD MEMBERS
(Adopted ______ 2000)

Members of the _________ School District Board of Education shall represent the public interest in education by adhering to the following commitments:

1. Representing all school district constituents honestly and equally, and refusing to surrender responsibilities to special interest or partisan political groups.

2. Avoiding any conflict of interest or the appearance of impropriety that could result from his/her position.

3. Avoiding the use of board membership for personal gain or publicity.

4. Recognizing that a board member has no legal authority as an individual and that decisions can be made only by a majority vote of the Board at a regular or special meeting.

5. Taking no private action that might compromise the Board or administration.

6. Respecting the confidentiality of privileged information.

7. Abiding by majority decisions of the Board while retaining the right to seek changes in such decisions through ethical and constructive channels.

8. Encouraging and respecting the free expression of opinion by fellow board members.

9. Being involved and knowledgeable about local educational concerns, and state and national issues.
