What is the Superintendent Development Program?

The Superintendent Development Program teaches and mentors individuals through the transition from their current, middle-level school administrator position to Superintendent of Schools at the end of the program year.

The foundation of this program is teams of two faculty mentors and five to seven participants working through a series of authentic learning activities - real issues facing superintendents in local school districts. The teams' products are solutions with real consequences.  The issues are identified and sequenced by the faculty to build insight, knowledge and attitudes during the program year. Writing assignments, interviews, small and large group activities, and seminars supplement the work on authentic issues.

Communication via computer technology is used extensively in the program. Participants must use e-mail and be proficient in computer technology communication.

Participants are trained to use systems thinking in areas identified as critical to success in the superintendency. Participants develop the skills and behavior necessary to enter the position of Superintendent of Schools.
