This is a foundation online workshop, with an emphasis on the legal foundation and personnel, for those with responsibilities for the administration of Student Extraclassroom Activity Funds.
Audience
For school district Extraclassroom Activity Funds Central Fund Treasurers, Internal Auditors, Faculty Auditors, Faculty Advisors, Business Administrators, Principals, and Superintendents
Why This Workshop is Important
The responsibility for the fiscal integrity, oversight, and the safety of student money rests with the Central Treasurer(s) and auditors appointed by the Board of Education. The Central Treasurer has daily fiduciary oversight as representative of the Board of Education, administration, and students. School and District Administrators, Faculty Advisors, and District Treasurers must also know fund operations. Claims Auditors and Internal Auditors audit extraclassroom activity funds. This workshop is a foundation for the effective management and administration of student extraclassroom activity funds. The Central Fund Treasurer(s) and auditor must understand what is happening, what is needed, and what can be done, to meet his/her duties and solving the practical problems of control needed to maintain the fiscal integrity of student funds. The Central Treasurer(s) and auditors must act knowledgeably so as not to leave student funds open to mismanagement and the school open to potential embarrassment. The reputation of the district’s administration and staff rests on knowledge and good fiscal decisions.

Dr. Jim Merrins is Executive Program Administrator of Educational Support Services. He administers numerous statewide fiscal workshops for superintendents and experienced school administrators, including Fiscal Navigation for Superintendents, The School District Negotiator,and Claims Auditor Training. Jim has more than 40 years experience in school administration, including 16 years as a Superintendent in Fredonia and Honeoye, New York. Dr. Merrins is NYS certified as a School District Administrator and School Business Administrator. Dr. Merrins taught school finance and school law at SUNY colleges for several years.
Costs
The cost of this workshop is $245 for the first participant, plus $225 for the second participant, plus $195 for the third and subsequent participants from the same school district or firm.
Materials
Each workshop participant will receive a notebook of workshop-related materials, guides, and reports, including excerpts of relevant laws and regulations; sample language for board policies; and sample forms and templates. Relevant documents are provided on a jump drive.
